The education paradigm all over the world has been changing at a tremendous pace. The B-Schools all over the world are working towards inculcating the latest pedagogical interventions to enhance the quality of education in order to make the B-school graduates corporate-ready. Even at this pace while the B-schools all over the world have geared up to be the best, American B-Schools are still being considered as an epitome of excellence all over the world when it comes to B-school education. In terms of student attraction, American B-schools are able to attract the maximum number of students from around the world. American B-schools enjoy the reputation and resources that have set them apart as formidable competitors in the field of management education. However, the rising demand for quality business education and the rapid growth of India’s economy has propelled Indian B-schools to step up their game and challenge the status quo. India has also been doing tremendously well when it comes to B-school education. Still, there are certain areas that can bring the game up for the Indian B-schools. Following certain steps can aid the management institutes in India to ensure quality education akin to American B-schools. The following could be the areas: Inculcation of interactive pedagogy and teaching Methods: American Business schools swear by their teaching methods. Indian B-schools have already been progressing well when it comes to interactive pedagogy and teaching methods but in order to do more certain areas are to be worked upon. First of all, an emphasis on case study teaching is salient. It not only aids the students in understanding the concept but also develops a practical approach. Professors are required to become the facilitator in the class and ensure that the classes are extremely participative in nature. The teaching pedagogy should completely transform to a practical interactive approach rather than the traditional lecture model. Offering a wide range of elective courses American B-schools offer a wide range of elective courses which aids the students to learn about the domain that they are inclined towards. This also facilitates the students in tailoring their education to their goals as well as interests. This flexibility is not found in the Indian education system. This can be one area to which the Indian education system can pay some heed. A structured curriculum with increased elective options can develop the interest of the students to a great extent leading to quality education. Placement and Industry Relations: Though in the current paradigm, Indian B-schools are focussing extensively on student placements still when a comparison is drawn with the American B-schools, the American B-schools are far better. American B-schools have a wide range of industry and corporation networks. The placement opportunities are thus far stronger. Indian B-schools can also focus more on the internship opportunities along with capstone projects which can aid the students in having a good industry experience thus making them corporate-ready. Research and publications: American B-schools emphasise a lot over research. The research always has practical implications for the industry as well as academia; moreover the professors tend to emphasize publishing in top-tier journals, contributing to the body of knowledge in various business disciplines. Research output varies in the Indian B-schools, moreover the applicability of the research is also not very clear. However, there is a growing emphasis on research and publications in some top Indian business schools. Though the Indian B-schools have been working relentlessly on the quality of education. However, a more focussed approach towards the above-mentioned can beget better results. The author is director of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Ghaziabad. Views are personal.
