That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you're not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.
F. Scott Fitzgerald
A story amuses us. A poem mesmerizes us. An art form takes us to another world - a world full of fantasies, dream and we remain humane; we live in harmony with life. Indeed, literature is a timeless piece of entertainment. It brings solace to life, releases sadness, stress in our life. It ignites creativity, imagination. One cannot deny the transforming role of literature in one’s life. We need to appreciate literature in our life, so that we can keep our sense of aesthetics intact. More specifically, when the world is heading towards a shrinking hole, when there is disruption of technology, human interaction is increasingly getting detached amidst social media, Face Time, WhatsApp calls, literature has the potential to provide solace and peace to the human mind.
Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become.
C.S. Lewis
This adage points towards the importance of literature in our lives. Some of the wonders that literature can do to us can be enumerated below:
Literature Facilitates the Meaning of Human Life
Literature helps a person take a closer look at the different facets of living. In many ways, literature, in its different forms, can change one’s perspective towards living. Through reflection of poems, life experiences narrated in stories, novels, dramas, literature helps us to have a glimpse of life.
Literature Ignites Understanding and Harmony
Literature increasingly values teamwork, critical thinking, adaptability, courage, and perseverance. It motivates us to empathize and understand other people’s feelings. Reading books is one of the best ways to fully immerse your mind into another person’s dialogue and experiences.
Literature broadens worldview
Literature liberates us. It expands our horizon; helps us to think, understand, channelize and create an open space in our mind to have a perspective. In a pandemic limiting social flow and experience, exposure to literature in its variety of forms offer a greater understanding of the spaces, communities, and geographies around us. In this way, literature helps us to survive trauma.
Literature Increases Vocabulary
A person can be defined as what they read and determine their vocabulary level according to that. Reading a wide variety of books helps building vocabularies; know about more words and their usages. Challenging self and getting attached to new words, spellings and their variant meanings help more to improve the vocabulary and have self-confidence while playing with words.
