I Saw Him - He Was Not Confident

When you say this line what is the thing you are mentioning about a person. Is it his way of speaking, the manner in which he is dressed, the way he is standing or sitting or the manner in which he is carrying himself. Many of you will have one common answer which is ‘THE WAY HE IS SPEAKING’ but then how do we make first impression by looking at a person, why is the proverb ‘First impression is the last impression, so important? Today I will talk about the underestimated element which in fact is the most important element in our personality, BODY LANGUAGE. As per the 7% rule, only 7% of our communication is verbal and rest 93% is non verbal. This suggests the indispensable role of body language in our personality. Body Language is the conscious and unconscious movements and postures by which attitudes and feelings are communicated. Corporate world is all about assessing an individual on his verbal and non verbal gestures. There are situations when a person who is a confident speaker is unable to get through an interview and the only reason beneath the same is improper reciprocation of body language. The way you carry resume in your hand, the way you place it on the table or the hand of the interviewer, the style with which you shake hand with the interviewer, the manner in which you place your hands on the desk are the minor noticed factors on which an individual is being judged. The demeanor possessed by you will always come up from the minor factors which are usually ignored by an individual and are not focused upon. I would like to discuss a short example that deals with the importance of eye contact that you make with a person. Oculesics holds utmost importance during communication. This may include eye contact or avoidance of eye contact. There are some very common interpretations of eye contact in a work place scenario. Too much eye contact is generally considered as communicating superiority, domination, lack of respect, threat or threatening attitude and a desire to insult. Too little eye contact is interpreted as not paying attention, being impolite, insincerity and being shy. Withdrawing eye contact by lowering the eyes is usually taken as a sign of submission. An individual should take utmost care of the manner that he/she is representing himself in the corporate world because Micro expressions, hand gestures, and posture are registered almost immediately, and play the role of a silent orchestra that can have long-lasting repercussions on the career of an individual.
